“Heartbroken,” Gary Sinise laments his son’s untimely passing, 33

Actor Gary Sinise and his family are grieving the loss of their 33-year-old son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, and have received tragic news.

On the Gary Sinise Foundation website and his Instagram page, Gary, 68, tragically announced Mac’s passing. He said that Mac tragically lost his fight with cancer on January 5.

Gary said in a moving message that Mac had been fighting Chordoma, an uncommon kind of cancer, since August 8, 2018. Only a few months had passed since Moira Harris, Gary’s wife, was also diagnosed with stage three breast cancer.

While Mac’s illness grew worse over time and eventually robbed him of his strength and mobility, Moira responded well to treatment and went into remission.

Despite facing health issues, Mac never gave up and kept pursuing his love of music. In addition to joining the Gary Sinise Foundation as assistant manager of outreach and education, Mac demonstrated his drumming prowess by playing with his father in the Lt. Dan Band.

Mac had a strong interest in music and studied composition and songwriting at the University of Southern California, where he graduated. Mac was paralyzed from the chest down after five spine surgeries between 2018 and 2020, but that didn’t stop him from being creative. He had finished working on the record “Resurrection & Revival” just before he passed away.

Gary wrote: “Like any family experiencing such a loss, we are heartbroken and have been managing as best we can.” Gary talked of the intense grief of losing a child. It is really tough for parents to lose a kid. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has experienced a comparable loss or who has lost a loved one. Everybody has encountered it in some capacity. I have met a great deal of the families of our fallen soldiers over the years. It’s difficult and quite painful.

“Our family’s cancer battle lasted for five and a half years, and it got more and more difficult as time went on,” he said. We are inspired and moved by how he accomplished it, and even though our hearts hurt from missing him, we find solace in the knowledge that Mac is no longer in pain. He battled a cancer for which there is no treatment, but he never gave up.

Mac leaves behind a legacy that is carried on by his parents, sisters, nieces, nephews, and other family members. Gary is dedicated to paying tribute to Mac by putting out his vinyl CD, “Mac Sinise: Resurrection and Revival.”

Gary’s words, despite his deep loss, only serve to highlight his love and admiration for his son, whose memory will never cease to uplift and inspire everyone who knew him.

We are thinking of the Sinise family during this trying time.
