After a protracted fight with cancer, adored actress and television icon Shannen Doherty passed away at the age of 53, according to her spokesperson.
“Actress Shannen Doherty passed away, and I confirm this with heavy heart. After battling illness for many years, she lost her struggle on Saturday, July 13, according to Doherty’s longtime publicist Leslie Sloane.
“Her dog, Bowie, and her loved ones surrounding the dedicated daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Sloane said, “The family requests for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.
The actress, who is most known for her part in Beverly Hills 90210, was initially given a breast cancer diagnosis in 2015 and has since been transparent about her health issues.
Doherty described how, prior to receiving a breast cancer diagnosis, her dog Bowie—named for the late David Bowie—had a remarkable sixth sense about her health problems. Bowie would often smell her right side, which is where the cancer was eventually found, giving away early signs that something was wrong.
Bowie’s behaviour changed after her diagnosis and during her treatments, which included chemotherapy and surgery, to become even more protective. Doherty called her dog’s presence “crazy protective,” indicating that the dog and her have a strong bond because it makes it tough for anyone to get near to her.
