Every bride hopes for a picture-perfect wedding day. It is hard to ensure that every detail of a wedding, including the dress, location, and cuisine, will go down without a hitch, even though many of them can be painstakingly prepared. One woman quickly discovered that not everyone shared her vision, even though she believed she had the ideal plan to guarantee a stress-free wedding day.
The soon-to-be bride chose to post in the well-known subreddit “Am I The Asshole” (AITAH) in order to ask for advise on Reddit. She was curious as to whether her expectations of her wedding guests were excessive. The post gained traction fast and sparked an intense discussion. The bride revealed that after sending a list of guidelines to their guests, she and her fiancé had received a large number of cancellations.
She made it plain before going into the specifics that her fiancé had contributed equally and wholeheartedly to these regulations, so they weren’t just her ideas. The couple’s “unplugged ceremony” was one of their main tenets. Except in the event of a serious emergency, guests were not permitted to have their phones on them throughout the ceremony or the supper that followed. Although the majority of attendees were aware of the no-phone policy during the ceremony, many thought it was overly stringent throughout supper.
Concerned that they would have to check on their kids while they were at home, several parents decided to leave them there. But the bride was adamant, saying that she would have to make an exception for everyone if she did so for just one person. “Checking with your kids is not an emergency,” she insisted. There could be no exceptions to the couple’s rule that all attendees wear black, with ladies dressing in dresses and men in tuxedos. Several guests were offended by this regulation, among them her aunt, who had just started dressing colorfully again after mourning her husband’s passing. The bride refused to change, even though her aunt found it upsetting to think of her wearing black once more. She also refused to make an exception for her prospective sister-in-law, who has body dysmorphia and always wears pants for comfort.
Along with ordering the bridesmaids’ gowns months in advance, the couple also gave them strict instructions to maintain their weight, which included eating whatever they wanted to eat. The bride’s mother became enraged about this regulation and informed her daughter that the wedding was “doomed from the start.” The bride and groom started getting last-minute cancellations from guests, and some bridesmaids even threatened to back out.
The idea that the bride’s maid of honor’s daughter would serve as the flower girl only served to exacerbate the chaos. But during the ceremony, the bride asked that the flower girl be left at a hotel with a babysitter. The maid of honor declined, deciding to leave her daughter with her mother because the wedding would take place four hours away by car. The bride’s flower girl was lost as a result of her choice.
The bride attempted to defend her regulations, but many Reddit users thought she and her fiancé were being completely unreasonable and called them the “assholes” in the matter. Commenters noted that although a couple is free to arrange their wedding as they see fit, guests are free to reject the invitation and are not required to comply with irrational requests.
Ultimately, Reddit users agreed unanimously that the couple’s rigid and inflexible standards were inappropriate.
