A boy in my backyard who changed everything

I was really sorry for him, this seven-year-old boy. I escorted him inside, offering him a glass of water and a seat. As he sipped, I noticed the filth on his face and the weariness in his eyes. “Where do you live, Tommy? Do you know what your address is? I asked a polite question. He shook his head. “My uncle told me he could no longer take care of me while I was with him. He drops me off on the street.
It was far terrible than I had imagined. Despite my plethora of questions, my primary concern was ensuring Tommy’s safety. Not wanting to scare him more, I decided not to call the police. Tommy was reassured by me, “We’ll work this out.” “First, let’s feed and clean you up.”

After taking a bath and enjoying a delicious dinner, Tommy was more relaxed. He was even able to force a half smile. I called my friend in social services, who assured me she would come over and assist. While I waited, I courteously asked further questions. Tommy revealed a few details of his life before going on the streets, such as his mother Lisa’s name and a harrowing account of abuse and abandonment.

My friend approached Tommy and struck up a friendly conversation. After what felt like hours, she reappeared with resolve in her eyes. “Laura, Tommy has to be taken to a safe place tonight,” she said. “I’ll place him in foster care for the time being and begin searching for his family.” But we need to handle this carefully.

I nodded, regretting my actions as much as I was relieved. Though Tommy had won my heart, it was time for him to move on. Over the next three days, I stayed in contact with my friend and received updates. His mother Lisa, who had been searching for him for a while, was finally located. She was ready to welcome him home now that she had conquered her own obstacles.

That reunion day was quite sentimental. I watched as mother and son embraced, tears streaming down my cheeks. Lisa thanked me and we decided to stay in touch by sharing contact information. Lisa updated me on their progress after several months. Tommy was doing great, and Lisa was starting over in their new life together.

One lovely afternoon, Lisa called and invited me to Tommy’s birthday party. Tommy greeted me as soon as I got there with infectious joy. Lisa hugged me once more and expressed her gratitude. That day was full of laughing and happiness. I felt really happy and at ease as I watched Tommy play with his friends. What had begun as a coincidental meeting had become a life-changing event for Tommy, Lisa, and me.
