When I saw that girl at the orphanage, I couldn’t help but feel as though I was looking at my own kid. The crescent-shaped birthmark that was on her wrist was the most shocking of all the things that she had in common with her. Her hair, grin, and eyes were all the same.
Caroline, who was my first wife, and I did not have a long-lasting marriage. The truth was that we were from two different worlds and never really got along with each other. As a result, we broke up not long after she gave birth to our daughter, Olivia, and we never saw each other again.
It was great with me that she was not interested in being a part of Olivia’s life because I was more than willing to take on both of those duties.
After I met Claire, I was able to successfully balance the responsibilities of taking care of my girl and working full-time.
Almost immediately, she and Olivia established a strong connection, and the incorporation of her into our lives felt like a piece of the puzzle that had been missing for a long time had now been whole.
After one year of marriage, we made the decision to adopt a child. Claire desired to have a larger family, and because adoption was the only choice we had, we made the decision to accept it and incorporate a kid who was in need of a loving home into our family.
We began the process, which included filling out applications and attending interviews; but, in the end, it was all worth it because life shocked us in the most spectacular way to take us by surprise.
As soon as Claire and I arrived at the orphanage, Mrs. Alvarez greeted us and made us feel welcome. She was a nice woman who was always willing to lend a hand.
I started a conversation with a young boy as we were chatting to the youngsters who were participating in a variety of hobbies, such as sketching, constructing bricks, and reading. In spite of this, I felt a tap on my shoulder just as I was going to give assistance with the coloring activities.
A young child approached me and inquired, “Are you a new father?”
When I looked at her, I became completely still. The resemblance between her and my daughter was uncanny. I had the impression that I was looking at Olivia, and that someone was pulling a joke on me when I was doing so.
However, subsequent to that, she extended her hand to me and introduced herself as Angel.
The birthmark that was on her wrist was brought to my attention as I shook her tiny hand. It was identical to the one that Olivia had available.
“What exactly is going on?” I inquired of myself.
When Claire became aware that things was not quite right, she came up to me. Just now, I brought Angel’s attention to the fact that we needed to have a conversation with the manager of the orphanage.
Aside from the fact that Angel was abandoned in front of the orphanages when she was only a day old, they were unable to provide us with much information unfortunately.
I inquired about the day that Angel arrived at the orphanage, and they provided a date that was far too familiar to be a coincidence about Angel’s arrival.
After leaving the orphanage with Claire, I was aware that I needed to have a conversation with my ex-wife.
Even though I hadn’t spoken to her in five years, I couldn’t disregard this matter because it was of such critical importance. She had all the answers to the questions that had been occupying my thoughts, and I was certain that she had them all.
Upon inquiring about Angel’s identity, Caroline was rendered speechless by my inquiry. “I… I…” she said.
I shouted, “Just say it, Caroline,” as my fury steadily increased. “Just say it.”
A moment later, she broke down in tears and declared that Angel was our only child. When she gave birth to twins five years ago, she reasoned that it would be in everyone’s best interest for me to accept one of the girls while she continued to take care of the other. Nevertheless, she was aware that she was unable to retain Angel at that time, so she placed her at the orphanage in the hope that she would be able to retrieve her once she had regained her footing. Regrettably, that did not take place.
Fortunately, I was able to locate my girl, and Claire was overjoyed that we decided to adopt her.
A moment that will live long in the memory was when Angel and Olivia first met. Olivia was stunned and remarked that it felt as if she was gazing at herself in the mirror. Angel continued to smile throughout the entire conversation.
At this point, our family was finished. I would have never imagined that our desire to adopt a child would lead me to my own biological daughter. Who would have thought? Unpredictability is a hallmark of life.
